Hydrogen moves toward concrete solutions – Nordic Hydrogen Week was marked by hopeful realism

Nordic Hydrogen Week brought together key players in the hydrogen sector, technology developers, and end users from 26 countries to discuss the latest solutions and future directions of the industry. The event demonstrated that hydrogen is moving from talk to concrete solutions, with discussions characterized by hopeful realism.

– This year’s Northern Power Business Forum focused on the next phase of the hydrogen economy – the transition from visions to practical implementation. The event showed that hydrogen is moving from hype to concrete solutions: discussions were ambitious, yet firmly grounded in reality, says Janne Hietaniemi, Account Manager for Cleantech and Industry at Business Oulu.

– It was particularly encouraging to see hydrogen technology companies emerging from research at the University of Oulu, such as Hycamite and ZUN-H, bringing the sector’s innovations to international markets.

The Business Forum panel discussions addressed, among other topics, the prerequisites for green steel production.

Solar hydrogen and emission reduction targets

One of the week’s most notable announcements was Zun-H’s commercial-scale hydrogen panel, which is advancing solar hydrogen step by step toward scalable industrial production.

The Business Forum panels also addressed topics such as the potential for green steel production and emission reduction targets in aviation and maritime transport. For the first time, the event featured an exhibition covering the entire hydrogen value chain.

At the event, the City of Oulu and Hy2Gen signed an agreement to strengthen collaboration in developing the Vihreäsaaren port area and to create the conditions for future industrial-scale hydrogen production and the associated port infrastructure.

In addition, Expomark and Women in Green Hydrogen signed a cooperation agreement for future editions of Nordic Hydrogen Week. This collaboration supports inclusivity and networking within the rapidly evolving hydrogen sector.

The next Nordic Hydrogen Week will be held in Oulu on 16–18 February 2027.

Emission reductions in aviation and maritime transport were addressed in the Aviation and Maritime & Logisticsprogram tracks.
